Yamaha keyboard owners are spoiled, it seems, with their keyboard sounds quality. This was demonstrated lately in music school when I had the change to play on a - rather old & battered, I must admit - Roland keyboard. The piano sounded like I was killing a kitten.

I've always been very content with my PSR-E413 keyboard, piano sounds on it are truly excellent. However, 32 note polyphony is quite a limitation. And as one progresses, and starts using arpeggios, this limit got hit quite frequently. And as my keyboard playing interest seemed something that wasn't a passing fling, I was looking around for more professional gear.

The Tyros 4 was just released, but its price tag was way beyond my reach, just as the Motif XF. I wanted a keyboard/synth with 70+ keys, both with keyboard accompaniment and virtual analog synth sounds. The Korg M3 and the Motif XS7 remained, from which I eventually chose the Motif.

Truly a great machine. It would take me over 2 days only to try out all presets on this machine. It has more than 6000 arpeggio's, which is amazing. Trying out all of these for half a minute would take me about 3 days.

Seems that I'm well-equipped now to take over the charts ;)

Het zomerconcert is altijd een hoogtepunt van de muziekschool : 3 dagen optredens van jong & oud, in een aardige mix van muziekstijlen en - instrumenten. Dit jaar werd voor mij persoonlijk gekenmerkt in het puur piano leren spelen (dus zonder keyboard begeleiding, waarbij linker- en rechterhand een verschillende melodie - en vaak een ander ritme ! - spelen).

Het gebrachte nummer was Conquest of Paradise van Vangelis, in een piano uitvoering op een voor mij onbekende Casio stage piano. Ik ben redelijk in mijn nopjes : 2 kleinere fouten die zo goed als onopgemerkt weggemoffeld konden worden.

Terug een pluim aan de organisatoren en de medewerkers voor een uiterst geslaagd concert !

In the ol'e days, everything was better, even synthesizers, apparently. The Vintage Synth Explorer was established back in 1996 in order to provide a fast and easy way to learn about vintage synthesizers. It has grown to include modern digital and analog emulators, software synths, plug-ins, and other new types of synthesizers and samplers, now containing over more than 600 instruments, such as the famous Korg Radias or the Roland Juno-160.

Dit weekend vindt het zomerconcert van de muziekschool plaats, en gisteren was de aftrap. Toch wel wat onder de indruk van de grootte van het evenement : 120 groepjes verspreid over 3 dagen spelen elk een ingestudeerd nummer. Waaronder ook ondergetekende, na 3 maand les en als eerste van twee solo muzikanten - de rest speelde allen met verscheidene mensen. Als concert vuurdoop kan dat tellen. Ik mocht niet klagen : slechts enkele kleine steken laten vallen, en dan voornamelijk omwille dat ik de muziek nauwelijks hoorde. Geleerde les : zelf eigen keyboard meebrengen volgende keer, dat bespaart een hoop geknoei met instellingen van een vreemd keyboard, dat dan nog eens minder toetsen heeft dan het mijne.
Soit, complimenten aan de organisatoren, puik gedaan voor zo'n groot event met een heerlijke sfeer !

The possibilities of software synthesizers can be endless, and the more possibilities a program offers, the more complex it appears to any newbie. The guys at Propellerhead realized this, and put up a 34-part tutorial covering all aspects of Reason, with off course a large part dedicated to the Thor analogue oscillator.

It's now about 6 weeks that I have my keyboard, the Yamaha PSR-e413. The keyboard has some cool functions, like accompaniment features (called styles), which are actually MIDI files containing some instrumentation banks, so it feels like you're part of a playing band. I have been following keyboard lessons since a week of 4, and I'm making quite some progress. 'Mull of Kintyre' does however stays difficult to play, even after several training sessions.

I have been searching to some ways to extend the possibilities of the keyboard, so I could have some more synthesizer features. Therefore, I've been testing some demos of software synthesizers and audio equalizers. Cubase and Cakewalk are big names in the music producing industry, but the first had troubles identifying my keyboard, while the latter experienced quite some audio lag and stutter. Both were quite too extended for my demand, however. It was only until I looked at Reason 4, till I really found what I was looking for : a true audio synth giving me the possibility of using my gear as a master keyboard, controlling the tracks with a sound of my liking. Reason has unlimited audio modification possibilities, truely an incredible program.

Since I'm officially allowed from this year on to have a mid-life crisis, I had to choose between getting either a tattoo, a Harley Davidson, an electric guitar or a synthesizer. Being the geek that I am, I off course chose for the item containing the most knobs and blinkenlights. Unfortunately, synths are quite expensive and above budget range for a new hobby that I'm unsure of persevering. Therefore I opted for a keyboard, which has less impressive sound samples, but fortunately, some keyboards integrate basic synth functions.

I finally bought me a Yamaha PSR-E413 : 32 note polyphony, arpeggiator, pitch bend and synthesizer Control Knobs for real-time control of filter & effects of sounds. Enough features to prevent sounding like the James Last band. It has an education suite, which will hopefully will help me mastering this instrument. Time to brush up my music theory and start playing !

De Bunker is een jeugdhuis in Glabbeek dat ieder jaar een festival organiseert. Vijf jaar geleden waren we erbij toen de Levellers de affiche sierden. Dit jaar heeft men blijkbaar totaal de danskaart getrokken met Stijn, Front 242, Etienne de Crécy en Dr Lektroluv.

Front 242 is al jaren één van mijn favoriete groepen. Halverwege de jaren negentig waren de groepsleden echter de samenwerking beu, en gingen elks hun eigen weg. Wat nog volgde, was een jarenlange release van remixes. Onlangs echter besloot Front zijn nummers te herarrangeren door gebruik te maken van de allerlaatste synthesizers, wat de live CD 'Moments' opleverde. Ook een manier natuurlijk om creatief te zijn. Ik krijg nog steeds kippenvel als ik Funkhadafi of Im Rythmus bleiben hoor brengen, maar opgewarmde kost van 20 jaar geleden, blijft opgewarmde kost natuurlijk. Wie ze gemist heeft, kan zich herpakken op 1 november : dan treden ze samen met Anne Clark (!) op in Hasselt.

Arsenal is een echte live groep : opzwepende funky wereldmuziek, die het vuur in de tent zette. Knappe groep met goeie nummers en duidelijk veel podiumervaring.
Etienne de Crécy bracht een DJ set, maar was te repititief om te kunnen blijven boeien. Sommige delen van zijn set zakten daardoor als een soufflé in elkaar. Nee, dan liever Dr Lektroluv. Deze belgische DJ die steevast in zilveren vestje en groen masker optreedt, stond terecht bovenaan de affiche.

Het was ondertussen al 3 jaar geleden dat we ons nog eens lieten zien op TWClassic : in 2007 trok de affiche op geen bal, en verleden jaar hadden we teveel miserie aan onze kop. Maar dit jaar was de line-up toch wel sensationeel : Keane, Moby, Peche Démodé en Basement Jaxx zijn stuk voor stuk topgroepen die uiterst aangenaam festivalvoer zijn. Voor de rest : ruim 60 euri aan junkfood en booze, een marcelleke van StuBru (spot u ons Martine ?), een Proximus klak (Mobistar klanten moesten het met een belachelijke lanyard doen), en een jammerlijk gefaalde poging op een Randstad Duckie t-shirt.

Qua muziek niet te klagen, behalve dan Basement Jaxx. Tjonge, tjonge, wat een ontgoocheling; waar was de groep van 'Where's your head at?' ? In de plaats kregen we een wall of noise van drum-n-beat, gospel and r&b, die de weide in een mum van tijd decimeerde, en waardoor we hopeloos in de file terechtkwamen door het grote aantal vroeg vertrekkende festivalgangers.

Many aeons ago, I made a music program on radio Scorpio, called Fallout. It was a fun time, where Jan Goesaert and me experimented with the medium radio. I think I can humbly say we were many years ahead of our time : we were the first on radio Scorpio (in 1996 !) to offer internet editions of our previous shows, podcasting even before the word was invented. It may have sounded amateurish, but I hope our enthusiasm kept things enjoyable for the poor listener. And the poor listener was a test subject for industrial noise and illbient, as that was the underground music type we were broadcasting.

The program featured a website, but this one got lost in the many hosting provider takeovers the web knew at that time. So I sobbed many years about the loss of this site, untill now : thanks to the Internet Archive, I found a partial copy of the site, which I used to create a reconstruction. The webdesign was -ehm- 1990ties, but was true to the show by having dark backgrounds and icons (and skulls ! and pentragrams !).
