Een reis die we al lang wilden maken, was een tocht door Canada, natuurlijk op dezelfde formule als onze vorige reizen, nl met een huurauto een land doorkruisen. De tocht werd een combinatie van verschillende tochten die door reisagentschappen kant en klaar voorgesteld werden. Het zou een 32 dagen durende tocht van 9000km worden van Denver via Calgary tot Seattle.
De reis werd via JetAir geboekt, gezien de positieve ervaringen in het verleden. De reisdocumenten waren in elk geval prima : een gepersonaliseerd boekje van het reisstuk in de USA, samen met een mapje voor het stuk in Canada, en tal van wegenkaartjes.


De autoverhuurmaatschappij Alamo kwam voor één keer niet zagen om allerhande extra verzekeringen. Een auto kiezen in Amerika is vooral voor een auto zonder slome motor kiezen, zeker als je in het Compact segment een auto huurt; we kozen uiteindelijk voor een knalgroene Fiesta break (easy to spot in the parking lot!) met impressionant audio entertainment system (Sirius satellite audio). Helaas merkten we pas later het gigantisch nadeel : de superkleine benzinetank van slechts 35liter, wat zich vertaalde in een actieradius van zo’n 500km. Dagelijks tanken zou een ritueel worden…


Dag2 : Denver
Denver, the one mile high city : een heerlijk moderne en nette stad waar het door de vele oneway streets effe wennen is met de auto. We verbleven er anderhalve dag, die we opvulden met een fietstocht in Denver downtown & via de fietspaden langs de Platte rivier en de Cherry Creek. We aten er tot 2maal toe in de Yard House die ons copieuze maaltijden voorzette voor zeer schappelijke prijzen.


Dag 3 : Rocky Mountains NP
Dag 3 in de USA was een relatief kort ritje naar Cheyenne, de hoofdstad van Wyoming. De rit bracht ons in Rocky Mountains National Park, een park gekenmerkt door de zeer ruwe natuur. De meest interessante plaatsen liggen rond de Bear Lake trail, maar de weg ernaar toe was gedeeltelijk afgesloten. We besloten dan ook om een relatief gematigde wandeling naar Cub Lake te volgen, die door het warme weer & de klim op het einde toch een pak lastiger bleek dan initieel verwacht.
We volgen de weg verder naar het noorden; het is de Bozeman trail, die oorspronkelijk door de eerste pioniers & goudzoekers werd gebruikt als weg naar het oosten – de weg voerde noordelijk naar Wyoming, om een passage te vinden door de Rocky Mountains. Wij rijden in onze moderne huifkar door naar Cheyenne, de hoofdstad van Wyoming.


Dag 4 : Custer State Park/Mount Rushmore
De volgende dag is een 500km rit naar Rapid City in South Dakota. We besluiten om het Custer State Park aan te doen. De inkom bedraagt 15$ voor een ticket dat een ganse week geldig is. Dagticketjes zijn er niet, en dat riekt naar afzetterij. Custer State Park is gekend voor de prairiehonden & de wilde ezels die door de constante voedering van toeristen zo mak geworden zijn als lammetjes; ze hangen rond op parkings, en steken zelfs hun kop naar binnen in de auto’s op zoek naar wat gemakkelijk te verkrijgen voedsel. Wie geluk heeft, kan kuddes bizons zien lopen langs de wegen in het park, maar de warmte houdt de beesten in de schaduw, ver weg van de auto’s.
Ten noorden van Custer State Park bevindt zich de Needles Highway, een stuk scenic drive door rotspartijen, dat we slechts gedeeltelijk kunnen bezichtigen door brandstoftekort. Je passeert er door impressionante tunnels waar motorhomes slechts met ingeklapte spiegels door kunnen.
Voor Mount Rushmore moet je 11$ betalen aan parking fee, en da’s het echt niet waard. Het ingangsgebouw voor het monument is imposanter dan de uitgehakte hoofden zelf, en alles wordt vreselijk commercieel uitgebaat. Enkel aanbevolen voor rabiate Amerikaanse patriotten !
In Rapid City is het bakken met temperaturen tot 40 graden. De stad blijkt een dieptepunt te zijn in culinaire beleving, en dat vertaalt zich in vreselijk eten in Firearms, een tot restaurant (nouja) omgebouwde ex-brandweerkazerne.

Dag 5 : Badlands NP
Honderd kilometer ten oosten van Rapid City ligt Badlands, een National Park dat het midden houdt tussen Death Valley (45 graden !) en Bryce Canyon of Capadocie in Turkije. Vreemd gevormde rotspartijen met veelgelaagde kleuren in de rotsen tonen een buitenaards maanlandschap. Er staat een sterke hete wind, die je ogenblikkelijk een droge mond bezorgt; we drinken hier dan ook liters water. De initiele bedoeling was om wat te hiken, maar met dit warme weer is dit gekkenwerk; we houden het op een kleine wandeling langs de Door en Windows trail.
De grote droogte eist hier ook zijn tol : van ver is een grote prairiebrand ten noorden van Badlands zichtbaar.


Dag 6 : Devils Tower
De volgende dag verlaten we Rapid City, en keren we terug naar Wyoming. Op weg naar Sheridan ligt Devils Tower, een gigantische monoliet van vulkanische oorsprong die reeds van ver zichtbaar is. We vrezen voor een sterk toeristische ervaring, maar dat valt enorm mee. We kiezen voor de werkelijk prachtige Red Beds trail, die ons een wandeling van anderhalf uur voorschotelt rond de monoliet, en die ons langsheen de rode aardlagen voert en ons wonderschone uitzichten biedt op de Belle Fourche rivier. Iets meer naar het oosten werd langsheen deze rivier stukken uit Dances with Wolves opgenomen.


Dag 7 : Bighorn Canyon
We zitten bijna in Cody, in het hart van cowboyland ! Op weg daarheen passeren we Bighorn Canyon, een uitgestrekte canyon die door de afdamming van de Yellowtail rivier een kunstmatig meer gevormd heeft, gelijkaardig met Lake Powell in Arizona. Het is mooie plaatjes schieten in Devils Canyon, die ons wat doet denken aan Canyonlands in Utah. Iets verder naar het noorden doen we de Barry's Landing trail, maar het is terug bloedheet, en de wandeling is langs geen kanten aangeduid, wat ons na een 3tal kilometer doet opgeven en keren we op onze stappen terug.
We proberen nog wat te zwemmen in een rustige kreek, maar de rode kleiaarde waar we diep inzinken maakt het niet zo'n aangename ervaring als verwacht. Bovendien zijn we helemaal alleen, en we zitten in berengebied, wat ons uiteindelijk doet terugkeren naar de auto.
Een even onaangename ervaring is die met de state police : ik rij blijkbaar iets te vlot uit het park, waardoor ik onverwachts aan de kant wordt gezet; ik kom er gelukkig vanaf met een waarschuwing; in het vervolg van de reis zou ik een minder zware voet gebruiken.

Flash has been everywhere on the internet for years, but it still sucks.

One of the most important scientific discoveries of the last 2 years has shaken up the astronomical world : the fact that our universe keeps on expanding, and doing this on an increasing accelerating rate. The energy responsible for that expansion is now called dark energy. How strange as it may be, this model can be explained by a theory that allows universes to be contained into black holes.
The idea that our universe is entirely contained within a black hole provides answers to these problems and many more. It eliminates the notion of physically impossible singularities in our universe and it combines two central theories in physics.
The first is general relativity, the modern theory of gravity, which describes the universe at the largest scales. The second is quantum mechanics, which describes the universe at the smallest scales, such as the level of the atom. However, quantum mechanics and general relativity are currently separate theories; physicists have been striving to combine the two successfully into a single theory of "quantum gravity" to adequately describe important phenomena, including the behavior of subatomic particles in black holes. Using a new quark property called torsion, a new explanation about the big bang may be created.
If black holes contain universes, then the notion of a multiverse reappears : a universe that is truely infinite, and where everything is possible. In such a multiverse, there exists somewhere in space an identical copy of you reading an identical copy of this article at this very moment.

It has become a habit that I blog about the Ubuntu upgrade of my desktop, but this year I haven't found the time to do it on a timely manner.
Precise got announced as one of Canonicals best finished products ever, which did me upgrade some days before the official release. How did the upgrade go ? Not so good.


Basically, it bugs the hell out of me that Canonical still cannot refrain itself from messing with the end user settings. This upgrade wasn't any different. Disabling features like Ctrl-Backspace-Delete, the URL paste in Firefox with the middle-mouse button are some of the know stuff.


Some of the nasty upgrade bits :

• I forgot to pin nvidia-173, so it got removed and as it isn't part of Precise's multiverse (nvidia-current creates high kernel load); my X-config was foobarred. I just gave up and switched to Nouveau.


• Contrary to a lot of people, I do not find Unity and Dash to become more and more user-friendly with every release; they are working more and more on my nerves. I've tried to install MATE, but there's something broken with the nouveau config, it seems.


• the upgrade died on my netbook, due to a foobarred /var/lib/dpkg/status


• the upgrade foobarred my bcm4314 wireless card config on my netbook.


• the root filesystem gets marked dirty as some processes don't get stopped at shutdown, resulting in a 10-15 second penalty at the next boot.

In the end, I got everything rather quickly in a working state, but I find upgrading and fixing desktop software even more boring than watching the 3456332th episode of Neighbors, just to mention something...
The whole experience has convinced me that I'm not fitting in Canonicals 6 month upgrade process anymore, so I'll probably switch to the LTS release cycle, or to a Debian stable or CentOS based desktop in the future.

On Wednesday June 6th, an exceptional astronomical event will take place. As seen from Earth, the planet Venus will pass in a straight line between Earth and the Sun. As a result of that, an observer on Earth can see the planet Venus 'transiting' the Sun disk. When you are looking at the Sun using special equipment (*never* look without any protection straight to the sun !), you can see a black circle slowly passing over the Sun.

The last time this event took place, was 8 years ago. However, it will take another 100 years, on 2117 Dec 11th and 2125 Dec 08th, for anyone to be able to observe this transit again.

For observers in Belgium, only the last part of the 7 hours during spectacle will be visible in the morning of June 6th, and this from 5:21 (sun rise) up till 6:55, when the planet's silhouette will leave the sun's disk. This event is an ideal opportunity to have a look at this through professional equipment, several observatories will be open to the public to give you an opportunity to look at the Venus transit.

Dark days and the smell of rotting pumpkins ? It's that time of the year again : here's the Perl Advent calendar 2011 !

Anyone familiar with the typical shape of a Bruichladdich bottle, knows that Port Charlotte is a product of the same distillery. 'An Turas Mor' means 'The Great Journey', and should be comparable with the Peat version of Bruichladdich, although slightly less peated. Sounds promising, not ? So cut the talking, and let's dive in, shall we ?


Color : Gold
Nose : *lots* of smoke and a hint of fruit & the sea. Hmm, surprisingly unpromising, and quite one-dimensional.
Taste : Fruity at first, nicely balanced sweetness, and then the peated smoke army rolls in. Still quite balanced. A hint even of wine, and more fruit in the aftertaste, maybe pear ? I expected pepper, and saltiness, but these stay absent. Much better than the smell promised.


What is there to say ? Clearly again a great whisky from Bruichladdich, only if the smell was a bit more interesting, this would be a winner ! Anyway, if you're into Islay stuff, be sure to check this one out !

I noticed that the upgrade for Oneiric was available, so I decided to jump in & upgrade my Ubuntu machines. It has become the habit that I encounter all weird stuff & errors during such upgrades, but that's something specific to me, it seems ;)


On my desktop, I returned to the installation program 2 hours later after I started it, only to find a black screen with a mouse pointer. No possibility to restore the screen, so I had no other choice than to kill X, and resort to command-line mockery. I've learned by previous experience that rebooting the machine or restarting X at this point lead to major mayhem on my desktop, so I entered 'dpkg-reconfigure -a' to complete the setup, which it actually did, to my big surprise.


Since Natty, there has been much turmoil on the internetz about something Canonical enforced to the enduser, called Unity. I have skipped this enforced desktop in the past by reverting to the Gnome legacy mode, but it seemed that this was completely foobarred in the current Gnome3 in Oneiric. So what has a man to do in a completely changed environment ? Adapt. I decided actually to try out Unity, and lo and behold, it was actually quite usable. Unfortunately, Unity does not support gnome applets, but I resolved this by running Conky, which adds extra panache to the desktop experience.


There are off course still quirks in Unity. Mocking around with the Compizconfig settings can ruin your desktop experience, although not so disastrous as in Natty. On my netbook, Unity refused to start up, leaving me only with a empty wallpaper. I resolved this by setting the LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 envvar in my .bashrc.


We'll see how this Gnome3/Unity combination goes. If it really turns out to be an atrocity, there's always KDE or XFCE to revert too...

My Nokia N97 phone is now 2 years old, and although the device got slaughtered in most user reviews, I must say I was fairly content with it. The problem with the device is that the experience got ruined by its software, Symbian S60v5, and its successor Symbian^2. Both were too 'heavy' for the N97 CPU, resulting in a slow operating of the device. But what's really drove me to buying a new handset, was the fact that the GPS took ages to activate (unless you enabled A-GPS), and the fact that the automated backups 'just stopped working'.
And then there's OVI suite. Please don't remind me of OVI Suite with its Nokia Software updater.
Nokia clearly has no clue what to do on the smartphone market, as indicated by the fact that the Meego-powered N9 is only available in some countries. The only one who is not aware that Symbian is dead, seems to be Nokia. And then there's the Microsoft deal.

Reasons enough to switch over to the Android camp. I was first thinking of getting the Wildfire S, but then I noticed that the Desire was equally priced. I must say I miss the N97's hardware keyboard, but all in all the Desire is a great device. Sleek, performant, and equipped with a great touch screen.

The STS-135 flight was the last of any Space Shuttle flight, and this marks the end of the Space Shuttle era, which began some 30 years ago.
